With rain holidays extended for two more days on November 10 and 11, schools and colleges in the city are switching to online mode of teaching. In view of heavy rainfall warning, the government on Tuesday declared local holiday for educational institutions in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai.

In view of heavy rainfall warning, the government on Tuesday declared local holiday for educational institutions in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai.
Students in Chennai and its neighbouring districts did not attend physical classes due to rains and festival holidays. “We wanted to connect with our students and did not want them to have another long gap in learning,” V Shanthi, headmistress Vidyodaya Girls Higher Secondary School in T Nagar. Many are attending online classes to prepare for exams, she added. MCC Higher Secondary School in Chetpet also announced that attending online classes was not mandatory. “Teachers and children who are affected by rain and facing issues like water logging and power cuts can opt out of online classes,” said GJ Manohar, principal of the school.
The school has started online classes for Class VI to XII. Teachers say that their pandemic experience has come handy during the rains as they were able to switch to online classes effortlessly.
Colleges have also allowed lecturers to take online classes during rain holidays. “The HoDs were given power to conduct online classes from Wednesday. If the attendance is 80% and above, the classes will be held. If it is low, the faculty member can cancel the class,” said S Santhosh Baboo, principal of DG Vaishnav College .
“Our college conducted classes in blended mode to maintain social distancing. Now, it will be completely online during which more theory classes will be conducted. Physical classes will resume once the situation settles down,” said Lilian Jasper, Women’s Christian College principal. Anna University has also rescheduled a physical induction programme for first year students.
