Chennai: Brace for very heavy rain today – Times of India

CHENNAI: The city and its suburbs will receive widespread heavy to very heavy rain on Thursday as a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal is moving closer to the coast.
The met department has issued a red alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Ranipet districts because of the likelihood of heavy rain till Friday morning.
The forecast for Chennai for 24 hours said, “Sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places.”
Thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram and Ranipet districts. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea.
As the low pressure is not likely to intensify further, rain is likely to reduce for the city on Friday. Chennai is not included in the list of areas likely to get heavy rain on Friday in the five-day forecast issued by the met department.
On Wednesday, Nungambakkam recorded 12.5mm rain, Ennore 4mm, Meenambakkam 9mm between 8.30am and 4.30pm.
Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Chengalpet, Tirupattur and Vellore, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Kallakurichi and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy rain in isolated places on Thursday.
The low pressure area with the associated cyclonic circulation persists over the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to reach off south Andhra Pradesh-north Tamilnadu coasts on Thursday.
