Five die in road accident near Erode in Tamil Nadu – Times of India

COIMBATORE: Five people, including four women, died when a speeding truck collided head on with a minivan they were travelling in near Parappalayam in Erode district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday afternoon. Three passengers suffered severe injuries in the accident.
The deceased have been identified as Thenmozhi, 20, wife of Mohan, Theivanai, 45, (both hailed from Muthugoundampalayam in Erode district), Manju, 18, of Thanuthuppalayam, Arukani, 40, of Kulur village and minivan driver Padaiyappan alias Prakash, 24, of Modakurichi.
Mohan, Kumaresan and Muthusamy suffered severe injuries.
The accident happened around 12.30pm when they were returning home in a hired minivan after offering prayers at Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple in Palani in Dindigul district. Except for the minivan driver, others were relatives.
A truck laden with cement bags that was heading towards Sivagiri from Erode collided head on with the minivan. The minivan was mangled in the impact. Four women and the minivan driver died on the spot.
Other motorists alerted the Sivagiri police who rushed to the spot. Deputy superintendent of police Anandaraj and his team reached the spot and rescued three passengers and sent them to Erode Government Medical College and Hospital.
The police registered a case against truck driver M Manikandan, 41, of Kasipalayam in Erode district. He was arrested.
