Chennai, Tamil Nadu Live News: The India Meteorological Department Tuesday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and its neighbouring districts, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur, in the coming days. Thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and delta districts of Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorm with moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over the rest of south Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu added 741 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday taking the total caseload to 27,21,762. The state also reported 13 fatalities, according to Health Department. Coimbatore and Chennai accounted for the majority of new infections with 119 and 114 cases, respectively, while Thoothkudi registered zero Covid cases. Tamil Nadu has a total of 8536 active Covid-19 infections.

Also, the Tamil Nadu government signed 59 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 35,208 crore on Tuesday. Sources said that if the proposals materialise, then they would generate close to 77,000 jobs. The MoUs were signed at the ‘Investment Conclave 2021’, which was organised by the state government. The event was presided over by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

In other news, an inter ministerial central team deputed by the Home Ministry visited rain ravaged villages in Puducherry on Tuesday. The team led by Joint Secretary to the Ministry Rajiv Sharma also visited coastal villages and wrapped up its two-day tour here and left for neighbouring Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a scheme of the then ruling AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu granting a waiver of outstanding crop loans, medium-term (agriculture) loans, and long-term (farm sector) loans issued to small and marginal farmers.

The top court said that it is settled law that a scheme cannot be held to be constitutionally suspect, merely because it was based on an electoral promise.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna set aside an order of April 4, 2017, of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, saying that it had erred in its view that because the scheme was in pursuance of an electoral promise, it is constitutionally suspect.
