Chennai: PIL seeking govt jobs for athletes fails – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: A public interest writ petition, filed by a sports association seeking allotment of suitable jobs in state government service to sportspersons, was dismissed by Madras high court on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu Sportsmen Association wanted the court to direct the authorities to allot a job to S Kavitha, an international Kabaddi player who had won medals in Asian Games. When the plea came up for hearing on Tuesday, it came to light that Kavitha was given an appointment in the police department with denial of accelerated promotion and she was later terminated from service. Recording the same, the first bench of acting Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice P D Audikesavalu said.
“… it is clear that Kavitha was given appointment with denial of acceleratory promotion. She was thereafter removed from service.” A writ petition was filed by her to challenge the order of removal, which is pending consideration before this court since 2016, the court said. Therefore, it cannot be said that the state had not recognised the sports activities of Kavitha.
