Fearing rain, locals park cars on flyover in Chennai – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: With T Nagar area inundated for more than a week due to incessant downpour, the residents have started parking their vehicles on G N Chetty Road flyover. The residents say that even if it rains for an hour, they park their vehicle on the flyover in order to avoid risk. Police said some of them park their vehicles the previous night soon after checking the forecast. This has also slowed down the traffic on the stretch.
Residents are also using the Velachery flyover as a parking lot for their cars and two-wheelers, hoping to save the vehicles from rain damage. “This is not even like 2015. This time our area was completely waterlogged. Our vehicles are getting submerged in the water. My sister’s car has already become irreparable. We have to keep spending a lot to repair the vehicles,” said Sridhar, a resident of T Nagar.
“The water level this time is scary. We did not want to take any chances and are parking our cars here, said the resident. The vehicles have been parked on the bridge in a long line since Sunday morning.
Another resident Balasubramanian from Sadasivam street said “We cannot spend sleepless nights thinking about the rain and our car. I lost hope that the water would recede. Instead, it is better to park here.”
Police said that the residents are parking their cars out of fear and this will go on until the rain is over. “We do not stop them as long as it doesn’t affect traffic. But some of them are even fighting for space,” said a traffic official.
