Chennai, Tamil Nadu Rains Live News: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Thursday issued a red alert for five districts in Tamil Nadu–Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam, following heavy rains.

The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has forecast thunderstorm with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thenkasi districts today. The department said that thunderstorm with heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places over Thoothukudi, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, Pudukkottai and Puducherry. Thunderstorm with moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over South Tamil Nadu districts. Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over rest Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Eighteen Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Tiruvanamalai, Villupuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli have declared holiday for schools and colleges on Friday. Due to bad weather, a Chennai-Thoothukudi flight was diverted to Trichy on Thursday.

As of Friday 7.40 am, Chennai received a rainfall of 7 cm. For the next 48 hours, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in the city. Thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur in some areas with maximum and minimum temperature likely to be around 30 and 25 degrees respectively.
