CHENNAI: Road name boards across the city will soon sport pictures of prominent heritage structures such as Central railway station, lighthouse and the Napier Bridge.
This is being done under the Ezhilmigu (Beautiful) Chennai component of Singara Chennai 2.0, with name boards on Kutchery Road and Luz Church Road in Mylapore, Mandaveli Road and Kamarajar Salai having been changed.
The names boards, made of a 3D reflective sheet aimed at giving better visibility at night, at the first three roads feature pictures of the popular Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore, Cathedral Church, Vivekananda Statue and the Arignar Anna Memorial, while the one at Kamarajar Salai features pictures of Chennai Central Railway Station, Napier Bridge, Light House and the Kapaleeswarar temple.
An official in Greater Chennai Corporation’s works department said each board cost 4,500 and that three sticker and printing companies had been shortlisted for the project. “We have set this up at Mylapore and surrounding areas to get the resident community’s feedback. So far it has been positive,” he said, adding that the department would carry out a centralized tender process to replace all the stickers.
Apart from this, under Singara Chennai 2.0, the corporation has set up LED lighting and green space underneath flyovers. It has also painted many common walls and begun removing posters from walls.
