Monsoon spells may make a comeback in Chennai, say weathermen – Times of India

CHENNAI: After a few days of dry weather, monsoon showers may be back in the city. Weathermen have forecast light rain at least for the next two days mostly due to the convective activity triggered by the entry of steady easterly winds.
While the city has chances of receiving spells on a few days this month, it may not be as heavy as recorded in November, weatherbloggers said.
For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast light rain over some areas of the city and the suburbs while the sky condition may be partly cloudy. Temperatures may be a maximum of 31C and a minimum of 24C.
“Once the system over the Bay dissipates, easterlies which got blocked will be back. The entry of warm moisture-laden easterlies entering the land which is cool in the night will lead to convection. This will bring rainfall for us,” a meteorologist said.
On Monday morning, some parts of north and south Chennai saw sudden spells as most of the core city localities experienced overcast skies. The city’s main observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam have mostly recorded zero rain since November 30.
Officials said the system which formed over the Bay and intensified into a cyclone blocked the flow of easterly winds into the land. But much of interior and southern Tamil Nadu had been receiving rainfall over the last two days due to winds from the north converging over those parts of the state.
“Easterlies will return on Wednesday and with it some rains again to coastal areas from December 8-9. There won’t be any dangerous spells for coastal districts,” blogger Pradeep John posted online.
