Bloggers called the cloudburst was due to the easterlies winds and that models did not pick up the sudden downpour.
Many parts of the city, including areas in and around Choolaimedu, Aminjikarai, Nandanam, Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Mandaveli and suburbs like Alandur, Guindy and Meenambakkam, saw a sudden downpour which started around 3pm after the day started with light on and off spells in the afternoon.

With 12cm in less than 24 hours, Nungambakkam on Thursday recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall since 2016. The station recorded 11cm on December 13, 2016. The all-time record is 29cm recorded on December 2, 2015.
While many areas were inundated, video clips of rainwater entering offices in secretariat went viral on social media.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms with heavy rain likely at isolated places over Chennai and suburban areas in the next two hours.
