Chennai News

TRICHY: The idol wing CID police recovered an antique emerald lingam from a bank locker in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur on Thursday. Idol wing police sources said the emerald lingam could be worth Rs 500 crore.
Acting on a tip-off that antique idols were kept at a house in Thanjavur, a team of officers led by additional superintendents of police R Rajaram and P Ashok Natarajan searched the premises on Thursday.
The team conducted inquiries with N S Arun, son of NA Samiyappan, 80. Arun told the police that his father had kept an antique emerald lingam in a bank locker.
The idol wing police said Arun handed over the lingam to them for the investigation. The police said Arun was ‘ignorant’ about how and from where his father had got the emerald lingam.
The police suspect that the emerald lingam might belong to a temple. They registered a case and began investigations.
A senior officer said Samiyappan was cooperating with the investigation.
