CHENNAI: Active cases in Tamil Nadu have climbed to 10,364 patients under treatment on Monday when state reported 1,728 new cases and six deaths. Barring Pudukottai, all districts reported fresh cases and nearly 22 of the 38 districts reported an increase in their daily tally compared to Sunday.
The sharpest increase was seen in Chennai, which reported 876 new cases, the highest in the state. While two of its neighbours Tiruvallur (80) and Chengalpet (158) also reported an increase, Coimbatore saw a sharper spike to 105 new cases.
While nearly one of every two cases in the state was from Chennai, the four districts together reported nearly 70% of the state’s new cases. “As of now we are seeing a clear spike in urban areas because of fresh clusters in schools, colleges, workplaces, and markets, besides weddings, funerals, and family reunions,” said director of Public Health Dr TS Selvavinayagam. The weekly average of fresh cases in Chennai rose to 544 compared to 128 on December 22. During the same time, the average cases in the state increased to 1,173 from 612.
Of the six people who have died there were two each from Chennai and Krishnagiri and one each from Coimbatore and Kancheepuram.
