CHENNAI: The staff members of temples run by the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR & CE) department will soon wear uniforms. The move is aimed at helping devotees identify the temple staff.
Chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday launched the scheme by distributing uniforms to 12 priests and other staff members of the HR & CE temples. HR&CE minister P K Sekar Babu, chief secretary V Irai Anbu and senior officials were present on the occasion.
Suhanjana, the state’s only woman oduvar in HR & CE temples at present, received the uniform from the CM along with 11 others.
Woman staff members would wear maroon colour saris with yellow borders. Male priests would wear dhoti and shawl with borders. The other male staff members would be given brown trousers and sandal colour shirts.
The department would distribute uniforms to a total of 52,803 staff members in 36,684 temples. Each of them would get two sets of uniforms, according to officials.
