Fresh Covid cases up by 58% in Tamil Nadu, Chennai sees sharpest rise – Times of India

CHENNAI: Fresh cases in Tamil Nadu went up by nearly 58% on Tuesday, when the state added 2,731 new Covid-19 cases compared to 1,728 on Monday.
The sharpest increase was reported in Chennai, which recorded 1,489 new cases compared to 876 on Monday. Its neighbours Chengalpet and Tiruvallur reported 290 and 147 new cases respectively. On Monday, Chengalpet recorded 158 cases and Tiruvallur reported 80 new cases.
While Coimbatore reported an increase to 120 compared to 105 new cases on Monday, Vellore reported 105 new cases compared to 22 on Monday. Overall, 28 districts in the state reported an increase in new cases compared to their Monday tally.
The weekly average of fresh cases in Tamil Nadu is 1,475 compared to around 720 in the first week of December.
Chennai, Chengalpet and Coimbatore are among districts of concern for the public health department. The average test positivity rate in Chennai is more than 2%.
The state discharged 674 patients on Tuesday. With this, the active number of cases in the state increased to 12,412 compared to 10,364 on Monday.
The nine fatalities reported on Tuesday took the cumulative toll tally to 36,805. Of the nine deaths reported on Tuesday, there were two each in Tiruvallur and Trichy, and one each in Vellore, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Karur, and Mayiladuthurai. All other districts including Chennai, Chengalpet, and Coimbatore reported no new deaths.
Meanwhile, 5.1 lakh teens took the vaccine on Tuesday, along with 1.3lakh adults pushing the day’s tally to 6.4 lakh. The cumulative dosage tally in the state touched 8.3 crore
