Footfalls drop in Chennai metro trains – Times of India

CHENNAI: After daily footfalls touched an average 1.3 lakh in December 2021, the average ridership dropped to 81,266 in January. Officials attribute the drop to the third wave of Covid-19, forcing people to again work from home, Sunday lockdowns, closure of schools and colleges and metro trains operating at 50% capacity.
A total of 25.19 lakh people used metro service in January compared to nearly 40 lakh people in December 2021.
A release from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said on January 3, a maximum of 1.35 lakh people travelled in metro trains. In contrast, 1.87 lakh people travelled on December 30 when road traffic came to a halt due to heavy rain and flooding. At least on four days in December, the footfalls crossed 1.4 lakh. In 2021, a total of 2.5crores passengers travelled in metro trains.
In January, 14.6 lakh people used smartcards and 74,879 people used QR-code tickets for their commute in metro trains.
