CHENNAI: Passengers who reach the city airport will soon get a glimpse of the culture unique to the state as the interior decor of the new integrated terminal will be in sync with classical traditions of language, music, dance and art forms.
With the building set to be commissioned this year, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started interior work such as ceiling, panelling and painting the structure built between the international and domestic terminals.
The traditional pattern of drawing kolam or rangoli has been incorporated in the design of the terminal building as a part of flooring pattern and ceiling design. The pillars inside the terminal have been wrapped with colours to create an effect of a tree.
“Work has begun to install kolam pattern on the interior roofing at the baggage claim area of the arrival terminal on the ground floor. Murals and wall art featuring scenes from ancient folklore made of traditional materials and done by artisans will soon come up,” said an official of the airport.
The wavy roof of the terminal, already installed, is designed based on Bharatnatyam dancers, while a lot of focus is being given to the aesthetics of the interior of the building, he added.
Airport director Sharad Kumar said that the new terminal will be completed in June this year
The new terminal is expected to increase the passenger handling capacity to more than 30million passengers per year.
