Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Highlights: The daily Coronavirus tally fell below the 3,000-mark in Tamil Nadu on Saturday with the state recording 2,812 fresh positive cases. This took the total tally to 34,33,966. At the same time, the toll climbed to 37,904 after the state recorded 17 more deaths on the day. Chennai and Coimbatore, among the 38 districts, accounted for the maximum of 546 and 523 new infections respectively.

Meanwhile, further relaxing Covid-19 restrictions, the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday announced that classes will resume for students of playschools and nursery (both for upper and lower kindergarten) after a gap of two years. The state government also did away with restrictions in virtually all sectors, with hotels, restaurants, bakeries, cinemas, theatres, shops, showrooms, jewellery stores, clubs, gyms, indoor stadiums hosting sports events, beauty parlours, salons and amusement parks being given the nod to function with 100% capacity.

In other news, the Madras High Court has ruled that there cannot be automatic closure of defamation cases following issuance of a government order by a subsequent government, which withdrew all the cases filed against officials, MLAs or MPs or the Ministers, including the Chief Minister, of the previous government.

Meanwhile, AIADMK top leader K Palaniswami on Friday said his party accepted DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin’s ‘challenge’ to debate on the NEET issue and asked if the ruling party head is ready for a debate on it.
