ABVP members breach security near Tamil Nadu CM Stalin’s residence – Times of India

Chennai News

CHENNAI: In a major security breach, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members – mostly from Thanjavur — staged a protest in front of Tamil Nadu chief minister’s residence at Teynampet in Chennai on Monday.
The agitators led by ABVP national secretary Nidhi Tripathy demanded justice for student Lavanya who died by suicide. Lavanya, a Class XII student at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School in Michaelpatti near Thirukkattupalli, died on January 19 while undergoing treatment in Thanjavur Medical College Hospital after she consumed an insecticide on January 9 due to mental agony over harassments by her hostel warden. BJP and Hindu outfits alleged that Lavanya had taken the extreme step after being forced to convert to Christianity
Around 12.30pm, the protesters gathered at the Cenotaph Road-Chittaranjan Salai junction. They picked up a quarrel with the police personnel assigned for security there. They pushed down the barricades and ran towards the CM’s residence. However, the agitators were stopped near the Japan consulate general’s office back entrance by the police personnel deployed at the CM’s house.
The cops restricted the agitators including four women and three juveniles just 100 metre away from the CM’s residence.
The police team led by the T Nagar deputy commissioner of police Hari Kiran Prasad picked up ABVP national secretary Nidhi Tripathy, state functionaries of ABVP Muthu Ramalingam and Hari Krishnan and 32 others and detained them to a community hall. They were made to undergo Covid test and taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) for medical examination.
The cops produced them before the XVIII metropolitan magistrate court around 9.50 pm on Monday night. However, the magistrate left the court claiming that the cops had brought the agitators late to the court. Following this, T Nagar DCP Hari Kiran Prasad spoke to the magistrate who agreed to take it up around 10.30 pm.
Magistrate Subramanian inquired the protesters and the DCP Hari Kiran Prasad. The police personnel displayed the CCTV footage retrieved from Chitaranjan Salai-Cenotaph Road junction explaining how they breached the security and ran towards CM’s residence. The magistrate refused to remand three protesters as they are students. Later, the magistrate remanded 28 men and four women, including Nidhi Tripathy, in judicial custody till February 28.
