Tamil Nadu Urban Civic Polls Voting LIVE: Based on the complaint of DMK candidate of alleged booth capturing, the election officer at Ward 17 in Tirumangalam in Madurai has appealed the State Election Commission for repolling. The voting in the urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu, that had begun at 7 am, came to an end by 6 pm. The last one hour was allotted for Covid patients and those with suspected infection. However, those who had arrived at the polling booths before 5 pm were allowed to cast their vote. The state registered 47.18 per cent voter turnout till 3 pm while Chennai recorded 31.89 per cent.
After a gap of over 10 years, the Tamil Nadu urban local body polls are being held Saturday in a single phase. Voting begins at 7 am and will end at 6 pm. The main parties in the fray include the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the BJP and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM).
Nearly 1 lakh police personnel have been deployed today in addition to other arrangements to ensure peaceful and fair elections. Out of the 31,150 polling stations, the critical/ vulnerable have been identified and additional security arrangements have been made accordingly. As many as 846 Quick Response Teams and 1,343 other police teams have been positioned at key locations. Checkposts have been established in 455 places and vehicle checks are being done 24×7 to check transport of illicit arms, liquor and to check movement of outsiders who do not belong to a particular jurisdiction.
