Tamil Nadu gets better, but Chennai still has highest Covid cases – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 1,051 Covid-19 cases and seven deaths on Saturday. After 3,561 people were discharged, the number of people on the active list went below 20,000 after 45 days since January 5. The state has 18,167 Covid-19 patients under home isolation or in hospitals.
With 238 new cases, Chennai continued to report the highest number of fresh cases in the state followed by Coimbatore which reported 157 new cases.
All other districts had fewer than 100 cases each. While Chengalpet had 96 new cases, nine other districts reported between 55 and 20 new cases each. Thirteen districts reported between 20 and 10 new cases each and an equal number of them reported cases in single digits. With one new case, Mayiladuthurai reported the least number of cases followed by two in Theni and three each in Ariyalur, Perambalur and Tirupathur. Nine districts reported an increase of between one and six cases compared to their new cases tally on Friday.
Nearly 46% of the active cases tally in the state were reported from Chennai (3,329), Coimbatore (2,772), Chengalpet (1,362) and Erode (1,026). Mayiladuthirai(33) had the least number of active cases followed by Perambalur (42) and Tenkasi (44). Among the active cases, 1,783 people were in hospitals.
Three deaths in Chennai, two in Coimbatore and one each in Tiruvallur and Thanjavur took the cumulative toll to 37,977. All the deceased had comorbid conditions and were above the age of 50 years. The youngest was a 52-year-old woman from Coimbatore, who died on Friday due to Covid-related pneumonia.
Meanwhile, 48,739 people above the age of 15 years took the first or second dose against Covid on Saturday. This took the total dosage tally at government vaccination centres in the state to 9.5 crore. So far, 29.4 lakh doses have been administered at private vaccination centres. The booster doses tally since January 10 has touched 5.4 lakh.
