Chennai: Mohan and Kavitha are yet to recover from the trauma. A day after losing their only child two-and-a-half-year-old M Prajitha was charred to death on Saturday in a fire triggered by an electrical short circuit in the air-conditioner at her house in Sankar Nagar, Pallavaram the flower vendors were wallowing in grief, her memories crowding their minds.
On Saturday, they had switched on the air-conditioner for the first time in more than six months, but a fire broke out, said police.
On Sunday, sadness was palpable in almost every house in the crowded locality, with the residents recalling the girl as an active child who kept everyone engaged with her non-stop chatter. In fact, many recalled, Prajitha used to spend more time with her neighbours than at her home as her parents were away almost all the time either at the Koyambedu market or at their flower garden near Tambaram.
Prajitha enjoyed playing with flowers, often chortling at the joy at the sight of the colourful heaps at the house, said Kasthuri, one of the family’s neighbours. “She loved to adorn herself with flowers and even tried at her hand at making garlands along with her mother,” she recalled. “Unlike other children, Prajitha never damaged the flowers. She occasionally also visited the flower garden with her parents.” Being the only child of the couple, Prajitha was pampered a lot. “We were always amused at her exaggerated expression. She never missed posing for a selfie whenever she adorned herself with flowers,” said Punitha, her neighbour.
Police said the fire from the AC spread so quickly on to the bed in which the child was sleeping that she was charred to death before any of the neighbours could rush in and douse the flames .
