Madras university ties up with Japanese varsity – Times of India

Chennai: On the occasion of India- Japan friendship’s 70th anniversary, University of Madras will collaborate with Keio University in Japan on coastal resilience and disaster risk reduction.
The collaborative research will be undertaken in areas such as climate change, urban resilience, health and well-being besides student and faculty exchange between the two universities. Rika Institute, a non-profit organisation will also be part of this collaboration.
“Through this partnership we will offer a certificate course on coastal resilience,” said professor Rajib Shaw, director of India Japan Laboratory from Keio University.
It will address the challenges in the area of community based disaster management in the post-pandemic period through transfer of technology, professional skills from Japan to India.
“During the previous collaboration with Kyoto University from 2006 to 2011, we have developed a climate disaster resilience index, climate action plan for Chennai, risk communication strategy for coastal vulnerable communities. Now, the focus would be disaster management and community response post- pandemic,” said professor R R Krishnamurthi, head, department of applied geology, University of Madras.
The research groups will study whether the disaster response and management was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The collaboration will be for five years from 2022 to 2027.
The department of health and family welfare, State Disaster Management Agency (SDMA) and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will be invited to utilise the outcomes of research projects under this MoU.
Taga Masayuki, consulate general of Japan in Chennai and N Mathivanan, registrar of Madras University also participated in the event.
