CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Thursday quashed the suspension of Kilpauk Medical College Hospital surgical oncologist Dr Subbiah Shanmugam. Dr Subbiah, who is the former national president of the ABVP, was suspended for his alleged association with political organisations in violation of service rules.
Allowing his plea challenging the suspension, Justice D Krishnakumar directed the Tamil Nadu government to conclude the ongoing departmental inquiry within 12 weeks.
On March 19, Subbiah was arrested in connection with a case registered for urinating in front of a woman’s house.
On March 21, he secured bail from the high court. While granting bail, the HC observed that the “unwarranted arrest on a public holiday with sole intention to prevent the detenu from getting legal assistance is a violation of fundamental rights.”
