Illegal bike race in Chennai: Madras HC directs youth to assist in trauma ward of govt hospital for 30 da – Times of India

CHENNAI: The Madras high court has directed an arrested illegal bike racer in Chennai to assist ward boys in the trauma ward of Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai for 30 days as a condition for his bail. This would give him hands-on experience on the sufferings undergone by road accident victims.
“The petitioner is directed to report to the duty doctor of Stanley Hospital trauma ward at 8am daily and stay in the ward till noon. He shall assist the ward boys to take care of the patients for 30 days from the next date of release from the prison,” Justice G Jayachandran said.
Further, the petitioner shall submit a one-page report daily about his experience in the trauma ward to the duty doctor. At the end of the 30th day, the hospital dean shall forward the reports submitted by the petitioner to the III metropolitan magistrate, George Town, for appraisal, the court added.
The judge passed the order while allowing a bail application moved by L Praveen – one among a group of illegal bike racers arrested by the Old Washermenpet traffic police on March 20.
When the plea came up for hearing, government advocate G V Kasthuri opposed the plea and submitted that recently youngsters were engaged in bike races on public roads causing menace to the road users.
“They also get injured and cause injuries to others by their unmindful act of rash driving. This petitioner along with other accused involved in the bike race causing ruckus in the public road,” she added.
Recording the submissions, the court said, “This court is not oblivious of the fact that recently youngsters are riding their vehicles rashly causing terror in the minds of the road users particularly, senior citizen.”
The pillion rider creates panic in the minds of the public by using metal rods and causing fire sparkles while they do wheeling and other adventures. However, for the said act detaining the petitioner in prison any further not be necessary, the judge said.
