CHENNAI: Nearly a month after fresh cases in the state dropped below 50, the cluster of cases at the IIT-Madras pushed up new cases on Friday to 57 compared to 39 on Thursday and 31 on Wednesday. The active cases in the state rose to 286.
With 18 more students testing positive at IIT-M, the case tally in Chennai touched 37. “Some IIT-M students had travelled from other states, some others had been to public places such as Besant Nagar beach and mess without taking adequate precaution,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.
On Friday, when a health team visited the campus, many students were seen moving around the campus without masks. The team asked the administration to postpone cultural or academic events to prevent crowding.
The health condition of all students is stable. Some students had complained of sore throat and one student had a fever, doctors treating them said. Students who tested positive are now in the isolation unit in Taramani. Two floors in the Mandakini hostel and three rooms in other hostels will be used as isolation units, IIT-M officials said.
On April 19, a student with a cold, fever and cough tested positive for Covid-19. By Thursday the case tally rose to 12. On Thursday, 666 samples were drawn from residents of three hostels – Mandakini, Sarayi and Badra. Eighteen of them returned positive.
Meanwhile, Fresh Covid cases continued to remain stable in most districts. At least 25 districts reported zero new cases. “Increase in cases are expected when we increase testing,” , said director of public health Dr TS Selvavinayagam. Over the last two days, the number of tests has increased to 18,000 from around 16,000.
