Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Live News: Home Minister Amit Shah Sunday arrived at the Chennai airport and is likely to visit Puducherry to lay foundation stones for a slew of projects. Shah would drive to the Aurobindo Ashram, the Subramania Bharathi Memorial-cum- Research centre and address the celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of philosopher-cum- saint Aurobindo at Pondicherry University.

Tamil Nadu continued to see an uptick in daily Covid-19 cases, as 53 infections were added afresh on Saturday, pushing the total caseload to 34,53,500. With zero fatalities being recorded in the last 24 hours, the the toll remained unchanged at 38,025. Over 29 people recovered from the infection, taking the number of active cases to 310. Chennai reported 36 new cases on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Twenty five more students of IIT Madras tested positive for Covid-19 Saturday morning taking the tally to 55 so far. Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan, who termed the spread as a small cluster, visited the campus alongside other health department officials to oversee the RT-PCR tests being carried out for those residing on the campus. Radhakrishnan said the IIT-M has stepped up adherence to Covid-19 protocols laid down by the government on its campus and added that this should be practised even when the cases are low. Reiterating his earlier comments that the XE variant was not detected in Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan said the state is geared up to handle the infections with adequate infrastructure.
