CHENNAI: The number of new Covid-19 cases reported across Tamil Nadu remained above the 50-mark for the second consecutive day. A total of 52 people tested positive in the last 24 hours.
Chennai reported the maximum number of infections (34) for the second consecutive day. However, cases have dropped at IIT Madras campus, which was being seen as a new cluster. While 22 new cases were reported at IIT-M on Saturday, only five got infected on Sunday.
So far, the government has tested 2,015 people in the central institute and 60 were found to be infected (2.8%). Among them, 40 have recovered, while the rest with mild symptoms are in isolation.
Since authorities suspected that the cirus spread could have started from the hostel mess, the IIT administration has started distributing food packets directly to rooms of students and staff.
“There was no need to screen all 7,300 students here. Tests were conducted at hostel blocks where infections were reported. Besides this, the mask compliance has increased from 5% last week to 95% or more now. This has helped in bringing down the number of fresh cases. This indicates the need to follow Covid-19 protocol everywhere,” Ma Subramanian, TN health minister, said on Sunday.
Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said that people need not panic as the XE Variant is yet to be reported in Tamil Nadu..
