Chennai News

CHENNAI: Above normal temperatures and high humidity levels are causing discomfort to people in Chennai even as the peak summer season is only less than a week away.
According to IMD’s live weather, the day’s maximum at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam was 35.9 degrees Celsius.
According to meteorologists, the day temperatures have been only a degree Celsius above normal but it is the humidity levels caused by the flow of sea breeze into the land that is causing the discomfort.
According to the Windy app, relative humidity in Chennai city and Tiruvottiyur was around 80% while it was 60% to 70% in places away from the sea, like Tambaram, Poonamallee and Avadi.
The IMD recorded relative humidity at 83% in Nungambakkam and 72% at Meenambakkam till 8.30am. On Thursday, the two stations registered maximum temperatures 35.9 degrees C and 37.6 degrees C, 0.3 and 0.9 above normal.
Peak summer season usually begins in May. Towards the end of May, wind directions change ahead of the onset of southwest monsoon.
