CHENNAI: A CBI court in Chennai allowed Baskararaman, an auditor and associate of Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram, to be taken to Delhi for further inquiry. Baskararaman was arrested by the CBI on Tuesday, in connection with a visa scam.
When he was produced before the VII additional judge (special court for CBI cases), K Dhanasekaran, the latter granted transit bail to the central agency to take the accused to Delhi.
Baskararaman was arrested a day after CBI conducted coordinated search operations at 10 locations in multiple cities in the country, including residences of the Chidambarams in Chennai and Delhi.
The raids were conducted after the agency registered a fresh case against Karti Chidambaram for allegedly facilitating visas of 263 Chinese nationals for a power company after receiving Rs 50 lakh as bribe when his father P Chidambaram was the Union home minister.
According to the CBI, Karti had allegedly received Rs 50 lakh bribe through Bhaskararaman to facilitate the visa of 263 Chinese nationals during the UPA regime for TSPL, a Vedanta Group company, in July-August 2011.
