Tamil Nadu on Friday recorded 37 fresh COVID-19 cases and active caseload stood at 315, a bulletin said.

There were no fatalities and as many as 44 patients were discharged from various hospitals following treatment, the COVID bulletin issued by the state health department said.

A 36-year-old man was hacked to death by a gang of four in broad daylight in Chennai Wednesday. While two members of the gang have surrendered, the CCTV recording of the shocking incident has now gone viral on social media platforms.

According to the police, the deceased, identified as Aarumugam, had been running a finance company. Wednesday afternoon, when he was returning home from his office on his two-wheeler, an unidentified gang attacked him near Shenoy Nagar.

In the CCTV recording, the gang can be seen chasing Aarumugam who stumbles and finally falls on the road. The gang continues to attack him with machetes and other weapons. Some of the passers-by were seen stopping their vehicles and witnessing the scene and some even recorded it on their mobile phones. However, no one could be seen coming forward to help Aarumugam, who was bleeding excessively. Read More

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday appreciated the significant contribution of Defence Service Staff College (DSSC) at nearby Wellington as a world renowned centre of excellence for professional military education.

Stalin, who is on a two-day official visit to the Nilgiris district, paid a visit to the college and said that it has enhanced the professional image and reputation of the Indian armed forces across the world.

Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the 12,000th LHB coach rolled out by the Integral Coach Factory here on Friday.

Following inspection of the ICF, Viashnaw flagged off the 12,000th Linke Hofmann Busch coach and examined the manufacturing of coaches for Vande Bharat trains.

A day after the Supreme Court ordered for the release of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi Assassination convict, AG Perarivalan, a senior district functionary of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has tendered his resignation.

Kovi Chitrarasu, the Dharmapuri district secretary of TNCC, has written a letter to party leader KS Alagiri notifying his resignation. In the letter, Chitrarasu said he was pained to see his party continuing alliance with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who is celebrating the release of a murder convict who murdered world renowned leader Rajiv Gandhi.

“I am resigning from my position as (Dharmapuri) district secretary of TNCC. I am requesting you to accept my resignation. Long live the glory of late Rajiv Gandhi,” he wrote.

It is to be noted that the members of Tamil Nadu Congress organised protest demonstrations across the state following the release of Perarivalan. Opposing the release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) on Thursday held silent protest in several parts of the state while the BJP accused the grand old party of adopting double standards in the issue.

The Congress party said its stand against AG Perarivalan’s release and key ally DMK supporting it would not affect ties between the 2 partners. Days ago, the ruling DMK allotted a Rajya Sabha seat to the national party and the Congress is expected to announce its nominee soon.

Both the Congress and BJP, however, converged on their opposition to Perarivalan’s release. The two parties said Perarivalan was not declared ‘not guilty’ by the Supreme Court and his release was only judicial in nature. Also, both the national rivals sought to know about ‘justice for the victims’ in the assassination case. (PTI)

The Madras High Court on Thursday restrained two persons, including a DMK minister, from making any arrangement for installing the statue of former Chief Minister, the later M Karunanidhi at a public place in Tiruvannamalai.

Since the Tiruvannamalai Collector did not file a sworn affidavit after consulting his subordinates and prayed for more time to do so as directed yesterday, a vacation bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday gave the direction.

The bench of Justices S M Subramaniam and J Sathya Narayana Prasad granted the interim injunction when the PIL petition from G Karthick came up for further hearing today. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu on Thursday recorded 42 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the cumulative infections in the state to 34,54,764.

Twenty seven men and 15 women in the state tested positive through RT-PCR test today, according to a bulletin from the state health department here. The toll, however, remained unchanged at 38,025.

Including 41 people who got discharged after treatment today, the net recoveries in the state rose to 34,16,417. The number of active cases remained 322.

Chennai accounted for a maximum of 23 new infections, followed by Chengalpattu with 5, Tiruvallur: 3, Coimbatore and Kancheepuram: 2 each, while Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Erode, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Salem and Virudhunagar recorded one case each, respectively, the bulletin said. (PTI)
