Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday ordered the Public Works Department (PWD) officials to release water from the Mettur dam on May 24, instead of the customary water release on June 12, to facilitate the Cauvery delta farmers to take up Kuruvai paddy cultivation.The water level in the reservoir is rapidly rising owing to rains in the catchment areas.

Due to copious inflows, the level of water in the dam on Saturday stood at 115.35 feet against a full reservoir level of 120 feet.At present, the dam has a storage of 86.25 TMC water and if the inflows continue at this rate, then the reservoir is expected to attain full capacity soon, the government said. Tamil Nadu recorded 46 new Covid-19 cases and zero deaths today. The number of people who have recuperated from the viral disease rose to 34,16,501 with 40 more people getting discharged. Tamil Nadu currently has 321 active infections.

The Tamil Nadu government has already taken steps to increase the forest cover to 33 per cent from the present 20.27 per cent, as announced in the state budget, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Saturday.

Similarly, the government is planning to modernise the Theppakadu elephant camp coming under Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris district, Stalin said here while addressing an event organised to celebrate 200 years of founding this tourist town, popularly known as Ooty. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin  today launched a special medical camp for malnourished children under the ‘Ensure Nutrition’ scheme for children below six years at Doddabetta Panchayat Muthorai Children Centre. 

The scheme ‘Ensure Nutrition’ aims to provide specialised medical care to children who are malnourished.

The medical camps are being held in all districts for a period of one month. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday laid foundation stones for 20 projects in Nilgiris district at a cost of Rs 34.30 crore.He also inaugurated 28 completed projects worth Rs 56.20 crore at a function organised at Government Arts College here.

Stalin also distributed welfare measures worth Rs 28.13 crore to 9,500 beneficiaries.Earlier, he paid homage to late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary by garlanding his statue at the bus stand here.

The Chief Minister also unveiled the bust of John Sullivan, founder of modern Nilgiris, at a junction near Government Botanical Garden here. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu Congress workers paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 31st death anniversary.

Led by TNCC chief K S Alagiri, Congress workers paid homage at the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial in Sriperumbudur, where the former Prime Minister was assassinated on May 21, 1991. 

The workers also took an anti-terrorism pledge. 

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) announced that several areas in Chennai will not receive piped water supply on Monday (May 23, 2022) due to maintenance work at the Madhavaram Milk Colony Road.

It’s the fifth day running and over 500 sanitation workers are sitting opposite the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) office premises at MRC Nagar demanding regularisation of their jobs. The protestors have been sleeping on the side of the road and raising slogans against the board’s decision to provide them work on a contract basis. The corporation reportedly has 1,800 temporary workers.

The workers said that neither have they slept in the last five days, nor have they gone back home to visit their families. They added that they ate once or twice and tried to stay awake by sipping on as they are always under the fear that the cops might evict them forcefully. Janardhan Koushik reports

India’s Covid-19 genome sequencing network INSACOG has confirmed one case of BA.4 sub-variant of Omicron from Tamil Nadu. Out of the first two cases of the variant detected across India, one is from Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine released a bulletin and said, “The WGS identification of the sub variant as per the initial report awaiting confirmation at the national level by NCDC is the result of the robust and focussed whole genomic sequencing being carried out by the State to keep track of the variants and sub variants in circulation.”

A 36-year-old man was hacked to death by a gang of four in broad daylight in Chennai Wednesday. While two members of the gang have surrendered, the CCTV recording of the shocking incident has now gone viral on social media platforms. According to the police, the deceased, identified as Aarumugam, had been running a finance company. Wednesday afternoon, when he was returning home from his office on his two-wheeler, an unidentified gang attacked him near Shenoy Nagar.

Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Regional Deputy Commissioner (North) Sivaguru Prabhakaran said that the fire spread to about six to seven acres of land in the 250-acre dump yard. 

“Close to 25 fire and rescue personnel and 150 corporation officials were involved in controlling the fire. We diverted all the other zonal officers, assistant engineers and others to this spot and they worked on a shift basis. Five fire service vehicles, two recycler vehicles, six corporation water lorries, 15 earth movers, eight JCBs were deployed…It was a huge operation. We identified the fire earlier and that’s why we were able to bring it under control soon,” Prabhakaran, who reached the spot to assess the situation, said. Read more

Fire broke out at the Kodugaiyur dump yard in North Chennai on Friday afternoon, barely 20 days after a major blaze was reported at the Perungudi garbage dump yard. Officials said that the fire broke out at around 11:50 am on Friday spreading across six-seven acres of land of the 250-acre dump yard.

Tamil Nadu on Friday recorded 37 fresh COVID-19 cases and active caseload stood at 315, a bulletin said.

There were no fatalities and as many as 44 patients were discharged from various hospitals following treatment, the COVID bulletin issued by the state health department said.

In the CCTV recording, the gang can be seen chasing Aarumugam who stumbles and finally falls on the road. The gang continues to attack him with machetes and other weapons. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday appreciated the significant contribution of Defence Service Staff College (DSSC) at nearby Wellington as a world renowned centre of excellence for professional military education.

Stalin, who is on a two-day official visit to the Nilgiris district, paid a visit to the college and said that it has enhanced the professional image and reputation of the Indian armed forces across the world.

Exhorting the college to continue its excellent performance and do good for the country, Stalin assured that Tamil Nadu will always be proactive and forthcoming to provide any possible assistance to help the college scale greater heights. (PTI)

Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the 12,000th LHB coach rolled out by the Integral Coach Factory here on Friday.

Following inspection of the ICF, Viashnaw flagged off the 12,000th Linke Hofmann Busch coach and examined the manufacturing of coaches for Vande Bharat trains.

“Vande Bharat manufacturing on fast track at ICF Chennai,” the Minister tweeted. (PTI)
