Chennai: University of Madras is planning to offer M Arch and B Arch from the 2023-24 academic year. So far, this course is offered by the standalone architecture colleges and colleges affiliated to Anna University.
Madras University officials said the university statues allow it to offer drawing, painting, architecture and western music under the faculty of fine arts.
“According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), architecture and computer science courses are considered as science courses. MCA is being offered by both arts and science colleges, engineering colleges. Architecture also will be offered in both these colleges after getting the approval from the Council of Architecture,” Madras University vice-chancellor S Gowri told TOI.
The university would offer MArch while the affiliated colleges are likely to be allowed to offer BArch from next academic year.
Meanwhile, 53 colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur have applied to the university to start new courses and additional sections from the 2022-23.
“The colleges wanted to start new undergraduate programmes in commerce, criminology and psychology. The university will conduct the inspection before allowing the colleges to start new programmes,” Gowri said.
The university also plans to verify the salary paid to the faculty members in aided colleges and private colleges affiliated to it. “In government-aided colleges, faculty members in shift one and two are doing the same work. However, faculty members teaching self-supporting courses or in shift two complain that they are low paid compared to colleagues working in shift one or aided courses,” an official from the university said.
In private colleges, faculty members allege they have been receiving salaries as low as ₹12,000 a month. “The university will issue directions to the affiliated colleges to increase the pay for their staff so they can attract qualified faculty members,” the official added.
