Amid the surge in Covid-19 cases in Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Tuesday announced that citizens should compulsorily wear masks in public places, failing which they will be slapped with fines.
Tamil Nadu reported 2,743 new Covid-19 cases pushing the statewide tally to 34,90,834 while the death toll remained unchanged at 38,027 as no fatality was registered in the last 24 hours, the health department said Wednesday. The number of recoveries grew to 34,35,090 with 1,791 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, leaving 17,717 active infections, a medical bulletin said. Chennai accounted for the majority of new cases with 1,062.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Madras High Court order restraining the passing of any unannounced resolutions in the meeting of the AIADMK general and executive councils concerning the issue of single leadership of the party. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court adjourned the hearing into a plea by AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam (OPS) seeking to stall the party’s July 11 General Council meet. Justice Krishnan Ramaswamy posted the matter for Thursday, for want of the Supreme Court order copy over a related case.
