CHENNAI: An engineering graduate who had recently been laid off from an IT company was arrested by the police from Korattur on Thursday. Police said that he had lost his job a few months back and had been stealing to meet his expenses. On Wednesday, he had stolen a two-sovereign chain from a jewellery shop.
S Prem Kumar, 25, is a native of Munnar, Kerala. He was working with a tech firm in Ambattur. Five months back, he was sacked from work. Unable to meet his expenses or open up to his family about the crisis, Prem resorted to stealing.
On Wednesday morning, Kumar went to a jewellery shop on MTH Road in Padi. He, according to police, spent at least half an hour looking at the ornaments on display. He made the staff show him several chains and bracelets, pretending to be confused by the designs and unable to make a choice.
When the staff weren’t looking, Prem slipped a two sovereign gold chain into his pocket. Meanwhile, he also appeared busy on the phone with his mother. Some time later, he left having taken pictures of a few chains and bracelets. He promised to return with his mother and buy the chain.
Later, while replacing the jewellery, the staff noticed that a chain was missing. They informed the store owner. They chased Prem, but he managed to flee from the spot. Based on a complaint, the Korattur police registered a case and arrested Prem on Thursday. They nabbed him based on his vehicle registration number, which had been captured in the CCTV footage.
