Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Live Updates (August 17): In a setback to AIADMK interim General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), the Madras High Court on Wednesday ordered maintaining status-quo as was the case on June 23 in the matter relating to the conduct of the July 11 General Council meeting of the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu. The general council, AIADMK’s highest decision-making body, ‘expelled’ rival leader O Panneerselvam and some of his associates from the party amid his leadership tussle with Palaniswami, who was picked as the interim general secretary of the party by the GC members. The order passed by Justice G Jayachandran on Wednesday, in effect held invalid the July 11 GC meeting.
In other updates, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Ltd (TASMAC) earned Rs 273.92 crore through its liquor outlets on August 14, the eve of Independence Day, according to officials. Since the liquor outlets remained closed on Independence Day, on August 14, Sunday, there was a mad rush among the tipplers to buy and store alcohol. Among all cities, Madurai recorded a sale of Rs 58.26 crore followed by Chennai with Rs 55.77 crore, Salem (Rs 54.12 crore), Trichy (Rs 53.48 crore) and Coimbatore (Rs 52.29 crore).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin is scheduled to call on President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday in Delhi. While, Stalin’s meet with Vice President Dhankar is underway, he would next meet the President, said a government source. In the evening, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is scheduled to call on PM Modi and take up several key issues that have a bearing on the state.
