Chennai: After witnessing heavy showers for the past few days as a result of Cyclone Mandous, Chennai will see some respite from the downpour as the sun may be out every day till Sunday.
Though, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light showers in the city for the next 48 hours, private weather forecasters say there may be a dry spell till Sunday.

The IMD, on Wednesday, said that a low-pressure area had formed over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining areas of south Andaman Sea and southeast Bay of Bengal and may move westwards till December 17.

Meanwhile, private weather bloggers say that the next round of rainfall may start from December 18. The skies will remain partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be Hover around 30°C-31°C and 23°C-24°C.

“This is due to the moderate easterlies and northeasterlies over the region in the lower tropospheric levels,” an IMD official said.

Since October 1, Tamil Nadu has recorded 422.6mm of rain which is 4% above normal, and Chennai has registered 884.7mm, which is 18% above normal for the period.

A weather blogger said the days are expected to be bright and sunny at least till December 18. “There are chances of early morning mist. Our next spell of rain may begin by December 19 or 20,” he said.

Skymet Weather said the next spell of rain may be due to the low pressure area formed over southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial region.

It added, “Heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu at a few places, including Chennai and Puducherry on December 18 and 19. After that, till December 23, scattered moderate rain and thunder showers are likely over all the five subdivisions of northeast monsoon and coastal Karnataka.”
