Petrol and diesel prices across the country held steady again on Friday, 16 December 2022 for over six months now. On May 21, the central government had announced an excise duty cut on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 per litre and Rs 6 per litre, respectively. Then on July 15, the CM of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde reduced the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and Rs 3 per litre on diesel. On August 24, Meghalaya increased the VAT on fuel prices, owing to which petrol price in Shillong now is Rs 96.83 per litre and diesel is retailing at Rs 84.72 per litre.
Today, petrol price in Delhi is Rs 96.72 per litre, while diesel price is Rs 89.62 per litre. Petrol price in Mumbai stands at Rs 106.31 per litre and diesel price in Mumbai is Rs 94.72 per litre.

Retail petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state and depending on various factors like freight charges, local taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT). Oil Marketing Companies such as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd update fuel prices daily at 6 am in line with foreign exchange rates and international benchmark prices.
