CHENNAI: By introducing more exam centres in remote places, the directorate of government examinations (DGE) is planning to reduce the travel distance to board exam centres. According to the plan, the farthest board exam centre will be 7km away for Class X, XII students this year.
Class XII state board exams are scheduled to begin on March 13. The DGE is planning to set up around 3,200 exam centres for 8.8 lakh Class XII students. For Class X exams, more than 10 lakh candidates will appear in around 4,000 exam centres.
“The maximum travel distance was brought under 10km in 2019. By awarding 500 additional exam centres in the past three years, the maximum travel distance to the exam centre will be seven km this year,” an official said.
This year, more than 100 new exam centres were awarded to government and private schools. The directorate has awarded exam centres to government schools situated in hilly areas, relaxing the minimum students strength rule, to cut the travel distance for the students.
“This is a good move that will help students write a hassle-free exam,” said N Vijayan, senior principal, Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Tambaram.
“Students will have to start early if the exam centres are far away. The distance can be further reduced to five km to ensure less travel in coming years,” he added.
P Perumalsamy, state president of the Tamil Nadu Post Graduate Teachers Association, asked the district education officers to allot evaluation camps to teachers close to the their residences.
