Security beefed up ahead of R-Day – Times of India

Chennai: At least 6,800 police personnel have been deployed in the city, ahead of the 74th Republic Day to ensure peaceful celebrations.Around 70,000 police personnel have been deployed additionally to ensure security across the state. The city police have also banned flying drones on Wednesday and Thursday.
The central intelligence agency had alerted the state police of a possible terror attack, following which the state police took steps to tighten security, especially at temples, malls, bus stations, railway stations and other public places.
The five-tier security at Chennai airport has been upgraded to seven-tier security. A senior police officer said, “The seven-tier security was implemented from Tuesday onwards.” Airport authorities have banned passangers from carrying liquid material and eatables like halwa, jam, pickles, and oil. With stringent security measures in place, domestic travellers have been advised to reach the airport one-and-a-half-hours before the flight’s scheduled departure. International travellers have also been advised to reach the airport four hours in advance. The CISF police personnel have installed door frame metal detectors (DFMD) at the airport, and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service to check baggage.
The traffic police have also announced traffic diversions to facilitate the R-Day parade on January 26. The stretch from Kamarajar Salai-Gandhi Statue up to War Memorial will be closed for vehicular traffic from 6am to 9.30 am to facilitate Republic Day celebrations.
