CHENNAI: A woman was crushed to death when the compound wall of a dilapidated building being demolished fell on her in Chennai’s Thousand Lights on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as M Padma Priya, 22, of Usilampatti in Madurai district. Priya, a software engineer, was staying at her relative’s house in Pammal.
On Friday morning, she reached Thousand Lights on a metro train and was walking down the road to her office – United Techno Info Systems Private Limited — located in Murugesan Naicker Complex on the Greams Road. Her colleague, Vinoth Kumar, 23, of Trichy, was walking with her.
When she was walking on the platform on the Anna Salai, the compound wall of a dilapidated building collapsed on her “due to vibration caused by an earthmover” used for demolishing the old building, according to police. Priya got trapped under the debris. Passersby came to her rescue. Their attempt to rescue her went in vain.
On information, fire and rescue personnel and a team from the Thousand Lights police station reached the spot. Fire and rescue personnel removed the debris in 20 minutes. Priya was rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) where the doctors examined and declared her dead on arrival.
The Thousand Light police have registered a case.
