The much-awaited film Pathaan was released just two days back, on January 25, and it has already emerged as a blockbuster. The performance at the ticket window is historic and reportedly, it has earned a mind-boggling Rs. 70 crores on Republic Day holiday. This has proved that Shah Rukh Khan is very much one of the greatest superstars even today. And it has also made it clear that his pairing with Deepika Padukone has always been very successful and historic.
Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Pathaan: Whenever Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have been cast together, Box-Office RECORDS are broken and HOW!
Both these charming actors appeared together in Om Shanti Om (2007). It also marked Deepika Padukone’s debut in Bollywood and thanks to the hype surrounding the film, it opened at Rs. 5.53 crores, despite clashing with Saawariya (2007) and releasing on Diwali day. The weekend collections of Rs. 21.47 crores were the highest ever at that time. Its lifetime earnings of Rs. 78.17 crores were the second biggest then, next to Dhoom 2 (2006; Rs. 81.01 crores).
Six years later, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone reunited for Chennai Express (2013). Deepika was hilarious and adorable as Meenamma and moreover, her chemistry with SRK was funny yet touching. Yet again, fans loved their bond in the film and they thronged the cinemas to watch the Rohit Shetty-directorial in large numbers. As a result, Chennai Express was not just a record opener (Rs. 33.12 crores), it also had a record weekend (Rs. 100.42 crores). And it broke 3 Idiots’ (2009) 3 ½ year-long-standing lifetime records by collecting Rs. 227.13 crores!
More than a year later, Shah Rukh Khan’s Diwali release Happy New Year (2014) also starred Deepika Padukone. Yet again, the hype was supreme as it also marked a reunion of the Om Shanti Om team, comprising Shah Rukh, Deepika and director Farah Khan. The heist comic entertainer stunned the trade by opening at Rs. 44.97 crores. This was also a record opening earning and its weekend collections of Rs. 108.86 crores also broke records.
And now Pathaan has also followed a similar trajectory. Though it’s an action film, the romance between Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone forms an important part of the narrative. Their chemistry especially in the song ‘Besharam Rang’ became a talking point and contributed greatly to the hype for Pathaan.
In short, whenever Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have been cast together, records are broken. This makes them one of the most successful jodis or arguably the MOST successful Jodi ever of Indian Cinema!
