CHENNAI: A 76-year-old woman was found murdered in Meleri village, Sriperumbudur, on Sunday night. The deceased, identified as Yasodhammal, was living alone in her house.
Police suspect her to have been killed for gain as her daughter said in her complaint that a 15-sovereign gold chain that she was wearing was missing.
The murder took place when Yasodhammal had returned to her home on Saturday morning after visiting her daughter in Chennai. Her neighbours, after realising she had not stepped out of her house by Sunday afternoon, went and knocked on her door, but did not get any response.
They informed Sunguvarchathiram police, who came to her house, broke open the door and found her lying dead inside in a pool of blood. Yasodhammal’s head was crushed using a grinding stone, police said. Fingerprint experts rushed to the spot and sniffer dogs were pressed into service.
The body has been sent to the Sriperumbudur Government Hospital for a post-mortem. Special teams have been formed to nab the killers. Police are also probing if she had any personal enmity with someone.
