Tamil Nadu Coronavirus News Live Updates: The CB-CID on Thursday arrested constable Muthuraj, who had been on the run following the deaths of Jeyaraj and Bennicks last week late Friday night. Thoothukudi police traced the constable to a village near Vilathikulam where he had been hiding inside a house.

Muthuraj was handed over to the CB-CID at their station in the district on Friday.
A woman head constable at the Sathankulam police station, who was one of the key witnesses during the custodial torture of the Jeyaraj and Bennicks gave her statement to the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Thoothukudi on Friday. S Revathy had been given a month-long paid leav, and four police personnel, including two women, had been deployed at Revathy’s residence for her family’s protection.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu recorded its highest spike till date with 4329 fresh cases reported on Friday, bringing the state tally to 1,02,721. Among these, Chennai reported 2082 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 64,689.

Four youths cleaning a septic tank in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district died of asphyxiation on Thursday. The police said the incident happened at a house in Chekkarakudi, a village about 40 km west of Thoothukudi town.

Pandi (24), Isakiraja (20), Bala (23), and Dinesh (20) hailed from the neighbouring Tirunelveli district. They had been engaged in the work since morning. At noon, one of them fainted inside the septic tank. “After that, the others too entered the tank one by one and managed to take him outside. While people rushed him to a hospital, the three others also fainted,” said a police officer.
Friends of Police (FoP), a community policing initiative aimed to bring police and public closer, has denied any involvement in the custodial deaths of a father and son at Sathankulam police station as alleged.

Deceased Jeyaraj’s wife Selvarani, in her complaint, has stated that alongside the Sathankulam police officers, there were volunteers of FOP who took turns to torture her husband and son Bennicks. Refuting Selvarani’s claims, FoP Thursday issued a statement claiming that the volunteers in the question are neither registered as FoP members nor have attended any training sessions.
