5,976 new Covid-19 cases, Tamil Nadu’s tally crosses 4.5 lakh – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 5,976 new cases on Friday taking the case tally to 4,51,827, with 51,633 people still under treatment. The state reported 79 deaths, which took the cumulative toll to 7,687.
For the second day, Chennai cases stayed below 1000 at 992 and 12 people succumbed to the infection. While Chennai’s three neighbouring districts added 784 new cases, Coimbatore and Cuddalore together added 1,094 new infections.

The state’s recovery rate was at 87% with 6,334 people discharged after treatment in the past 24 hours. Around 11% of the people tested positive in the state were still under treatment. With 27,102 cases, the 11 northern districts contribute nearly 52% of the state’s active cases.
The eight western districts with 11,839 account for 23% of the state’s active cases. The 10 southern districts had 7,147 and eight Central districts had 5,437 people still under treatment.
Chennai alone had 12,003 active cases and Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur together had 5,642 active cases.
Coimbatore had 25% of its total infections still under treatment. There were 32% active cases in Erode, 31% in Tiruppur and nearly 29% in Salem. Madurai has 6% (877) cases active. Perambalur (102), Dharmapuri (187) and Sivagangai (203) had the lowest number of active cases in the state.
The state tested 81,588 people and 83,699 samples on Friday. The average positivity rate is 9.1% in the state. The fatality rate was 1.7% in the state. Sivaganga (2.6%) had the highest fatality rate followed by Madurai (2.5%), Ramanathapuram (2.2%) and Chennai (2%).
On Friday, the 11 northern districts added 3,150 new cases. Chennai’s neighbours – Chengalpet had 370, Kanchipuram had 154 and Tiruvallur had 260 new cases. Excluding Chennai and its three neighbours, the other districts added 1,374 cases including 499 cases in Cuddalore, 216 in Tiruvannamalai and 182 in Kallakurichi.
Coimbatore added 595 new cases taking the fresh cases in the eight-district western region to 1,328. Salem added 239 followed by Erode with 121 cases. Thirteen deaths were reported in the region, including five in Salem.
The 10 southern districts added 813 new cases including 123 in Madurai, 114 in Tirunelveli, 107 in Kanyakumari. The eight central districts had 679 new cases, including 164 in Thanjavur, 104 in Trichy and 102 in Pudukottai. Southern and central districts saw 17 and seven 7 deaths.
