Chennai, Hyderabad Coronavirus News Live Updates: Tamil Nadu recorded 5447 positive cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the state tally to 6,35,855. Among these, Chennai reported 1369 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 1,76,779. The state recorded 67 deaths, putting the state toll at 9984. 61 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities.

As of Wednesday, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 45,135. According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 77,25,962 samples from the state have been sent for testing till date, with 91,401 samples having been sent yesterday.

The state discharged 5524 patients following treatment Wednesday, putting the total number of recoveries at 5,80,736.

As of October 7, Telangana has reported a cumulative COVID-19 caseload of 2,06,644 cases. 86.65 percent of patients have recovered and the case fatality rate stands at 0.58 percent.

On Wednesday, 1896 new cases were reported and 2067 patients recovered. 26,368 patients are active and under treatment across the State as of today and of them, 21,724 are in home or institutional isolation.

Telangana, as per the state’s latest medical bulletin, is testing 91,264 samples per million population. About 70 percent of all cases are asymptomatic.

The ruling AIADMK on Wednesday declared Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami as the party’s CM candidate for next year’s Assembly election. The decision, announced by Deputy Chief Minister and party coordinator O Panneerselvam at the party headquarters in the morning, was also an occasion that seemingly put an end to disagreements between the two leaders.

The party also formed a 11-member steering committee, a demand by Panneerselvam for long. Delay in formation of this committee had triggered an unease in the party — the Palaniswami faction had thus far ignored the demand, even though it was part of promises made in August 2017 when the two factions merged, leaders close to Panneerselvam pointed out.

The upcoming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other urban local bodies (ULBs) will be conducted using ballot paper, due to Covid-19 and other factors, the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) announced Monday. The SEC had recently sought the opinions of political parties in this regard.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, K Partha Sarathi, the state election commissioner, said that along with the pandemic, multiple factors made the SEC choose ballots over EVMs, one of them being the non-availability of VVPATs.
