Active Covid cases in Tamil Nadu may soon drop below 40,000 – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu on Saturday added 4,295 new cases and 57 deaths to its Covid-19 registry that pushed the case tally to 6,83,486 and toll to 10,586. The number of active cases, however, is nearing the 40k mark with 5,005 discharges in the last 24 hours, taking the number to 40,192.
Officials say by early next week, if fresh cases continue to decrease, active cases in the state will go below 40,000.
The 11 northern districts together reported 51% of fresh cases and 56% of deaths on Saturday. The zone also had the highest number of active patients (21,088). After north TN, fresh cases were highest in the eight western districts (1,273) followed by Central zone (418). New cases in the 10 southern districts (386) fell below the 400-mark.
On Saturday, though all districts reported fresh cases, the numbers were above 200 only in four. Hotspot Chennai (1,132) was the only district to report more than 1,000 fresh cases. Chennai was followed by Coimbatore (389) and Salem (240). With just eight cases, Perambalur reported the least number of cases. It also had the least number of active cases at 78.
Chennai (15) also topped the table in terms of deaths, followed by Coimbatore (6), Chengalpet (5), and Vellore (4). Dharmapuri and Salem registered three deaths each. Sixteen districts reported zero deaths. Active cases in Chennai dropped to 12,907 from 13,289 on Friday. The number of active cases was above the four-digit-mark in Coimbatore (3,861), Salem (2,127), Chengalpet (1,860), Tiruvallur (,1465), Tiruppur (1,166), Erode (1,060) and Cuddalore (1,047) districts.
