Steady decline in average number of new Covid cases in Tamil Nadu – Times of India

CHENNAI: Despite recording sporadic Covid-19 clusters, the average number of new cases in TN has been on the decline.
Between November 20 and 26 the state reported an average of 1,598 cases every day. This fell to 1,427 in the week between November 27 and December 3 and to 1,297 in the week that followed. Between December 11 and 17, the average daily cases was 1,182. During this time the average RTPCR tests conducted every day went up from 67,930 to 69,182. “We did not reduce the testing but the cumulative positivity rate dropped from about 2.4% to 1.7%. A clear sign that the infection is dropping,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.
With fall in cases, there was fall in deaths and case fatality rate. For seven days between November 20 and 26, the state was reporting an average of 16 deaths, which dropped to 13 in the week between December 11 and 17.
On Thursday, the state added 1,174 new cases pushing its total tally to 8,03,516. With 11 new fatalities, a total of 11,942 people have died of Covid in the state. At the end of the day, there were 9,829 patients (1.2% of those infected) on the active case list.
Hotspot Chennai reported 342 cases and four deaths. Together the northern districts had 50% of fresh cases reported in the state. At least half the number of active cases was in the north. After the northern districts, the highest number of cases was reported in the west. With 120 new cases Coimbatore topped the cases table after Chennai. There were no deaths reported from the central zone.
