CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Friday cancelled its decision to permit 100% occupancy in theatres and multiplexes. However, the government allowed the theatres to screen special shows.
The government has issued a statement saying that the theatres and multiplexes would be allowed 50% occupancy. It comes into force immediately and remains until further order.
Citing the Madras high court’s observation, the state government said special shows can be permitted. The Madurai bench Madras high court on Friday asked the state government not to permit more than 50% occupancy in cinemas till January 11. It asked the government to consider increasing the number of shows.
The principal bench of the court suggested that the government wait till vaccine comes. “When schools are still closed permitting 100% seating in cinemas does not sound good,” the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said.
Earlier, the Union ministry of home affairs had communicated to the state government asking it to adhere to the Covid-19 standard operating procedures and recall its January 4 order permitting 100% occupancy in theatres.
