Chennai logs 151 cases of Covid-19, 4 deaths – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 503 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Thursday while 544 patients were discharged, leaving 4,629 active cases in the state registry. After six deaths, the cumulative death toll was revised to 12,339, while the case tally touched 8,36,818.
At least 52,276 people underwent RTPCR tests in 254 authorised labs. The state has so far tested more than 1.55 crore people since February 2020.

There were zero Covid-19 deaths reported from 34 districts on Thursday. Of the six deaths reported in 24 hours ending Thursday noon, four were from Chennai. Tiruvallur and Thanjavur reported one death each. Barring Kallakurichi, all districts continued to report fresh cases, and 21 districts reported a single digit increase in cases. Chennai, the worst affected district, reported 151 new cases, followed by Coimbatore (48) and Chengalpet (41). All other districts reported cases below 30.
“Since January, we have been able to push the curve down,“ said health secretary J Radhakrishnan. “We have pulled down daily cases, deaths and positivity rate,” he said.
Since January 1, Chennai reported 5,076 new cases and 82 deaths; Chengalpet added 1,319 cases and 21 deaths and Coimbatore recorded 1,807 cases and 16 deaths. During the same period, Tiruvallur had 12 deaths while 25 other districts reported deaths in single digits. Eight districts – Kallakurichi, Karur, Perambalur, Sivagangai, Tenkasi, Tirupathur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukudi – did not report any Covid-19 deaths in the period.
“Cases too have come down. While Perambalur reported six cases since Jan 1, while three other districts Ramanathapuram (87) and Kallakurichi (64) reported below 100 cases, 30 other districts reported cases in three digits. On an average, at least 20 districts reported new cases in single digits,” he said.
Puducherry reported one death of Covid-19 on Thursday, pushing its death toll to
647. The Union territory reported 39 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the the total number of active cases to 291 on Thursday.
The territory has so far reported 38,973 cases, of which 38,035 patients have recovered, registering a recovery rate of 97.6%.
