CHENNAI: A man fought off four armed men, snatched a machete from one of them and chased away the assailants at Ayapakkam on Monday. CCTV camera footage of the incident went viral of social media.
Police said the gang members led by a man named Prabhakaran had come to kill M M Murthy, an AIADMK functionary and a former councillor. He was not on good terms with Prabhakaran and the two often picked fights, said police.
On Monday, the gang targeted Murthy on First Main Road, encircling and attacking him. Not one to be bullied, Murthy fought back and snatched a machete from one of the assailants and charged towards them.
As the men ran for cover, Murthy chased Prabakaran and set upon him with the machete. With Prabakaran lying on the ground, Murthy called his accomplices for help over the phone. He then warned Prabakaran and boarded a car that had arrived at the spot.
The Thirumullaivoyal police rushed Prabakaran to the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where his condition is said to be critical. Murthy was admitted to a private hospital in the locality. He had suffered injuries to the shoulders and nose.
Police registered a case and arrested S Vijayabaskar, 23, M Muthu, 24 and S Raju, 19, of Ayapakkam. Murthy was not booked as he had attacked the gang in self-defence, police said. The arrested people were booked for attempt to murder.
Sources said Murthy had helped a man, who had attacked Prabakaran, come out on bail. This had infuriated him and he had hatched a plan to kill Murthy.
